Welcome to Misplaced American!
Hi, my name is Buddy and since 1998, I’ve been living in Europe—first in Cologne, Germany, then moving to England in 2003. Along with my English wife, we’ve called various places across the UK home—from London proper, the east of the Pennines in the north of England, Cardiff in Wales, and many places in between. No matter where we end up, we feel most at home within the triangle of Cambridge, Oxford, and London.
Born and raised in America’s Midwest, I followed my heart across the Atlantic in my 20s—without having traveled internationally as a tourist first! That leap led me not only to Europe but also into a lifelong passion for travel (though no apparent skill for languages!). Over the years, work has led me to more than 90 countries—each offering its own unique twist on life.
Through all these experiences, I’ve learned that no country is perfect—but they all share common values: a safe home, good food on the table, and quality time with friends and loved ones. The real challenge comes when we judge before understanding.
This site offers a glimpse into some of my travels around the world, a place to share some of my interests, and a way for friends and family to keep track of where I am (I’m often on the move). Feel free to explore my stories and insights as I continue this global journey.
After all these years abroad, I consider myself a global citizen—not quite the same person who left my country all those years ago, and not quite a local either… I focus on helping others and spreading smiles and laughter wherever I go. Life’s too short not to enjoy every moment!
Feel free to explore my stories, insights, and experiences as I continue this global journey. And by all means, drop me a note—I’m pretty sure you can figure out my email.
