So,

Before my friends jump onto the band wagon to ask who has broke into my account and impersonated me, it IS me.
I don't consider myself overweight but I have to accept my wife's learned opinion and accept that I cannot eat whatever I want every single day if I don't want to turn into an Oompa-Loompa.
Starting the week of the 13th of August I will be going from one extreme to the next.  Historically I thought myself allergic to gyms, my past idea of fun was to sit outside the window of a gym and eat ice-cream while watching the "big" people trod along on their hamster wheel.  I thought that people who went on diets had some sort of mental switch broke in their heads and that my metabolism was something that science should study.  I was invincible... No more, starting the 13th of August I will be following a very strict regime for me:

I will be jogging following the pre-training programme designed for non runners from the book "The Non-Runner's Marathon Trainer" by David Whitsett (Author)

I will be going to the gym at least once a week on top of ths

For me, I will also be attempting to play golf or go to the driving range once a week (I have never done this as a routine but thought that I need some sort of reward for doing this)

I will be following the 5:2 diet as described on the Horizon programme, not temporarily mind, I think that if it works it will not be a diet but will be my eating habit for life. (As the name implies you eat normally 5 days a week, then two days a week you eat 500 calories if you are a woman, or 600 calories, if you are a man.)

I will be monitoring  my progress every single month and keep a journal as things progress. Mainly to see if all this hoopla is hog wash or there is something to it.
3 things set me on this "quest" if you will,
1) A friend of mine (Let's call her Jodi) is joining the other mindless masses in running a marathon.  This same "Jodi" (what a daft alias spelling you chose) also at one point and time quite smoking on a New Years resolution...
I have no wish What-So-Ever in running around with the masses like a sheep to see if I can make it, Native American Indians herded buffalo (Bison) off cliffs in a similar fashion hundreds of years ago.
If for whatever reason I decide I want to run that distance it will be for me, with my music playing in my headphones at the beat of my own tune, this is too much like religion or a New Years resolution for me, what's the point.
I decided that if I am going to run, I am going to do it on my terms and without the need to follow the masses but to take my own (borrowed perhaps) initiative.  My goal is to be able to comfortably run 5 miles with my wife on a weekly basis without a stop and without feeling like I would prefer some blunt instrument slowly ploughed through my brain.
2) My wife and I watched a fascinating BBC programme " Horizon: Eat, Fast and Live Longer" and I want to see if I experience similar results.  As such, I am not only going to run and go to the gym but for at least the next 5 weeks I will also be Intermittent fasting 2 days a week
"One area of current research into diet is Alternate Day fasting (ADF), involving eating what you want one day, then a very restricted diet (fewer than 600 calories) the next, and most surprisingly, it does not seem to matter that much what you eat on non-fast days." from the Horizon show website
Actually the show was quite an eye-opener and the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19112549 does give a fairly good overview
and finally 3)   I will be turning 40 in January and I would rather start the next 2/3rds of my life (yeah you got that right) with new and improved habits.
A little about me, I am a corporate suit in that I run a department of smarter people than myself delivering amazing results to keep my superiors happy, I am married without kids and have lived in several countries in my colourful past.  I love travel, food, drink and haven't had an affinity for sports in 20 years.
Here is my current status as of the week of the 13th August 2012 and my current measurements:
Age:     39
This unfortunately will continue to rise regardless of what I do.   The best I can go with I overheard at a hospital recently "age is just a number" or the old adage "I may grow older but I'll never grow up!"
Height:     5' 8 1/2" "pipe down stretch" I hear you say, this will change in time but I don't growing taller in my immediate future without external assistance
Weight:                     198.8lb or 14 Stone 2.8 lb in British terms - I'm just happy it's under 200, I come from a long line of big boned men in my ancestry and in comparison I feel like a fully fledged Adonis
This doesn't yet qualify for pleasantly plump but it definitely isn't fighting fit.  I have always said "round is a shape, it makes you shady in the summer and warm in the winter"
Smoker:     Not in quite some time but I don't like to think of myself as a quitter so lets say I am on a  break until I decide to not be; or they come up with a cigarette that makes you smell like you just took a long hot scented bath and look like you just returned from the fountain of youth (I won't hold my breath).
Health:     I consider myself reasonably healthy; granted, I have MS (have been diagnosed for roughly 5 years),
I have 3 slipped disks and a bad knee from an old high school sports injury.
I don't often get sick but when I do, whoa look out, man flu is preferred to this.
Diet:     Till now, I have prided myself on being a carnivore, I am not even a meat and potatoes guy. I just need a Rib-Eye, garlic rub and a BBQ grill, add in good weather, lime, Indian Old Monk rum, ice and coca cola and you have the ABSOLUTELY perfect combination cutlery is optional.

for the next 3 months, I will be monitoring my progress and posting any observations I make as this goes on.  I am posting this because I had a very difficult time finding sufficient information online to show me actual facts without some personal reflection and heart vs. mind speak.  Wish me luck
